After October’s devastating Wine Country wildfires, including the Tubbs Fire in Sonoma County, many people who lost their homes in the flames discovered that their insurance was woefully inadequate and that they would not fully recover their losses from the fire.

In response, many homeowners are increasing their coverage, even if they didn’t lose anything in the fire. They want to be more prepared if another fire were to occur in the future.

Miguel Alfaro, a local State Farm agent in Petaluma, told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that he has heard from hundreds of homeowners concerned about their insurance policies.

Standard insurance plans usually do not cover all of your potential losses from a fire for a number of reasons. For example, most plans do not include coverage for items like trees.

Additionally, some damages fall outside the purview of an insurance plan. In order to recover losses for emotional damages or loss of income, residents must take legal action.
